{"id":818,"date":"2013-04-24T14:04:31","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T14:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arg.tech\/?page_id=818"},"modified":"2013-04-24T14:04:31","modified_gmt":"2013-04-24T14:04:31","slug":"grumpy-old-debate","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.arg.tech\/index.php\/research\/grumpy-old-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"Grumpy Old Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style2\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Though we all have had the occasion to shout at the TV or radio disagreeing with the views being propounded, there is a cultural warmth towards the stereotype of the cantankerous, grumpy old men and women for whom disagreeing with the latest opinion on the radio becomes a regular pastime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style2\"><span>The objective of this project is to understand how older people in particular might engage with online resources associated with broadcast programmes.<\/span><span> <\/span>In this EPSRC-funded project we combine three strong themes:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Style1\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">(i) <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">fundamental and enabling research on understanding human debate \u00a0and the engineering of robust systems based upon the understanding provided by the ARG:dundee Group;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style1\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">(ii) <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">user-driven research on human-centered computing built on a track record of industrial and latterly academic work in accessibility for older users from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/side.computing.dundee.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">SiDE Group<\/a> in Dundee (the\u00a0project has the potential of high <\/span>profile impact in addressing social exclusion in specific groups of older adults);<\/p>\n<p class=\"Style1\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">(iii)<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/span><\/span> the support of the BBC on both their R&amp;D and programme-making sides is helping with design and deployment; as an example of \u00a0&#8216;gold standard&#8217; \u00a0argumentation we have taken the BBC Radio 4 programme\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006qk11\" target=\"_blank\">The Moral Maze<\/a> and we plan to support audiences of both radio and TV productions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Style2\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Specifically, we are interested in exploring how existing tools for online argument<\/span> and debate developed might be extended to support and encourage engagement from older listeners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style2\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">For more information please email: \u00a0Rolando Medellin <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"mailto:rolandomedellin@computing.dundee.ac.uk\"><span>rmedellin@computing.dundee.ac.uk<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> or Chris Reed <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"mailto:chris@computing.dundee.ac.uk\"><span>chris@computing.dundee.ac.uk<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though we all have had the occasion to shout at the TV or radio disagreeing with the views being propounded, there is a cultural warmth towards the stereotype of the cantankerous, grumpy old men and women for whom disagreeing with the latest opinion on the radio becomes a regular pastime.
