Recommender System Technologies based on Argumentation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recommender systems have evolved in the last years as specialized
\ntools to assist users in a plethora of computer-mediated tasks by
\nproviding guidelines or hints. Most recommender systems are aimed
\nat facilitating access to relevant items, a situation particularly
\ncommon when performing web-based tasks.<\/p>\n

At the same time, argumentation has been gaining increasing
\nimportance in several AI-related areas, mainly as a vehicle for
\nfacilitating rationally justifiable decision making when handling
\nincomplete and potentially inconsistent information. In this
\nsetting, argument-based approaches can be used to automatize
\nreasoning and decision making in several situations such as
\nthe handling of complex policies or managing change in dynamic
\nenvironments.<\/p>\n

In this talk we will present a first approach towards combining
\nrecommender system technologies with argument-based inference.
\nThe ultimate goal is to enhance practical reasoning capabilities
\nof current recommender system technology by incorporating
\nargument-based qualitative inference.
\nProof of concept prototypes of the proposed approach have been
\ndeveloped using using Defeasible Logic Programming (DeLP),
\nan argument-based logic programming framework.<\/p>\n

Some particular case studies will be discussed. One of them will
\ninvolve applying argumentation in the classification of web search
\nresults according to preference criteria declaratively specified
\nby the user. We will also present an overview of an argument-based
\ncritiquing system for language usage assessment, where
\nsuggestions are built on the basis of the Web linguistic corpus.<\/p>\n

The presentation will conclude by discussing some of the
\nrelevant research lines that are currently being pursued
\nfor developing argument-based decision making.<\/p>\n
